If you're a business owner in Dubai, you already know how competitive the market is. Every day, new restaurants open in JLT, new agencies launch in Business Bay, and new e-commerce stores pop up across the city.
But here's the hard truth: If your website isn't on the first page of Google, your competitors are getting the customers that should be yours.
I've worked with dozens of Dubai businesses, from small cafes in Al Quoz to e-commerce stores in Dubai Silicon Oasis. And I've noticed the same SEO mistakes showing up again and again.
The good news? Every single one of these mistakes is fixable.
In this post, I'll walk you through the 7 biggest SEO mistakes Dubai businesses make—and exactly how to fix them.
Mistake #1: Targeting the Wrong Keywords (Too Broad)
I recently spoke with a fitness studio in Dubai Marina. They were trying to rank for "fitness classes."
Sounds reasonable, right?
The problem? "Fitness classes" gets thousands of searches per month, but:
-
It's incredibly competitive (think: Fitness First, Warehouse Gym, etc.)
-
The intent is unclear (are they looking for classes, gym memberships, or just information?)
-
Most searchers aren't ready to buy
The Fix: Target Long-Tail Keywords Instead
Instead of "fitness classes," target phrases like:
-
"best HIIT classes in Dubai Marina"
-
"women's fitness classes near JLT"
-
"affordable personal training in Dubai"
These keywords have:
✅ Less competition
✅ Clearer intent (they're ready to book)
✅ Higher conversion rates
Action Step: Use Google Keyword Planner or even just Google autocomplete to find long-tail keywords your customers are actually searching for. Type your main keyword and see what suggestions appear.
Mistake #2: Ignoring Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the single most important tool for local SEO. Yet I'm constantly amazed by how many Dubai businesses haven't claimed theirs.
When someone searches for "coffee shop near me" or "plumber in Business Bay," Google shows a map with three businesses at the top of the results. That's the Local Pack, and it drives 44% of all clicks.
If you're not in the Local Pack, you're invisible.
The Fix: Optimize Your Google Business Profile
Complete every single field:
-
✅ Business name (exact as on your license)
-
✅ Address (Port Saeed, Dubai – make it precise)
-
✅ Phone number (+971555502382)
-
✅ Website (www.afaqraqmiya.com)
-
✅ Categories (choose the most specific ones)
-
✅ Business hours (accurate, including holidays)
-
✅ Photos (at least 10 high-quality images)
-
✅ Posts (update weekly with offers, events, news)
Pro Tip: Ask every happy customer to leave a Google review. Businesses with 10+ reviews get 50% more clicks than those with none.
Mistake #3: Not Optimizing for Mobile
Dubai has one of the highest smartphone penetration rates in the world. Over 60% of all searches happen on mobile devices.
Yet many Dubai businesses still have websites that:
-
Take forever to load on 5G
-
Have text too small to read
-
Buttons too close together to tap
-
Require zooming and pinching
Google uses mobile-first indexing it looks at your mobile site first when deciding how to rank you. If your mobile experience is poor, your rankings will suffer.
The Fix: Make Your Site Mobile-Friendly
Test your site with Google's Mobile-Friendly Test (search for it). If it fails, you need to fix it.
For Shopify users: Most modern themes are mobile-responsive. Make sure you're using one.
Check these elements on your phone:
-
Can you read text without zooming?
-
Can you tap buttons easily?
-
Does the site load in under 3 seconds?
-
Is the checkout process smooth?
Mistake #4: Neglecting Local Citations
Local citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) on other websites—directories, review sites, social media, etc.
Google uses these citations to verify that your business is legitimate and where you claim to be.
The problem? Many Dubai businesses have inconsistent information across the web. One directory has the old phone number. Another has the wrong address. This confuses Google and hurts your rankings.
The Fix: Audit and Standardize Your Citations
First, search for your business on:
-
Google Maps
-
Apple Maps
-
Yelp UAE
-
2GIS
-
Yellow Pages UAE
-
Facebook
-
Instagram
Make sure your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) is identical everywhere. Same spelling, same format, same everything.
Then, submit your business to relevant UAE directories:
-
Dubai Chamber of Commerce
-
Dubizzle (business listing)
-
Industry-specific directories
Mistake #5: Poor Content Quality
"Content is king" is cliché because it's true. Google wants to show users the most helpful, valuable content.
But many Dubai businesses make these content mistakes:
-
Thin content (200-word pages with no value)
-
Duplicate content (copying from competitors)
-
No blog or resources section
-
Outdated information
-
No local relevance
The Fix: Create Helpful, Local Content
Ask yourself: What questions do your customers ask every day?
For a real estate agent:
-
"What are the best schools in Arabian Ranches?"
-
"How much does it cost to buy in Dubai Marina?"
-
"What's the process for getting a mortgage in UAE?"
For a restaurant:
-
"Where can I find the best brunch in JLT?"
-
"What restaurants are open late in Dubai?"
-
"Best places for business lunch in DIFC"
Create blog posts answering these questions. Each post should be at least 800-1,500 words, well-researched, and genuinely helpful.
Pro Tip: Include local landmarks, neighborhoods, and cultural references. This shows Google (and readers) that you understand Dubai.
Mistake #6: Ignoring Arabic Search
While English is widely used in Dubai, a significant portion of searches happen in Arabic—especially for local services and products targeting Emirati customers.
Many Dubai businesses have no Arabic content at all, missing out on this audience entirely.
The Fix: Create Arabic Content (or at least Arabic Keywords)
You don't necessarily need a full Arabic website (though that's ideal). At minimum:
-
Include Arabic keywords in your content where relevant
-
Create Arabic versions of your most important pages (Home, About, Services)
-
Use hreflang tags to tell Google about language versions
-
Get Arabic reviews on your Google Business Profile
Important: Don't use Google Translate for Arabic content. It produces unnatural results that hurt your credibility. Hire a native speaker or professional translator.
Mistake #7: No Tracking or Analytics
The biggest mistake of all? Not measuring what works.
I've talked to business owners who spend months on SEO but can't tell me:
-
How many visitors come from Google
-
Which keywords drive traffic
-
Which pages convert best
-
Whether their efforts are paying off
Without data, you're flying blind.
The Fix: Set Up Proper Tracking
At minimum:
-
Install Google Analytics 4 on your website
-
Set up Google Search Console
-
Track your keyword rankings (even a simple spreadsheet works)
-
Monitor your Google Business Profile insights
Review these metrics monthly:
-
Organic traffic (up or down?)
-
Top landing pages from search
-
Top search queries
-
Average position for key terms
-
Conversions from organic search
This data tells you what's working and what needs to change.
